Design Note: This post contains the revelation lists associated with Lulu’s Memory Mystery, including a lot of material that the PCs discover while exploring Avernus in Part 7 of the Remix. See Using Revelation Lists, for tips and tricks on how to make best use of these lists.

REVELATION LIST – ESSENTIAL

Homework: In her wanderings in Avernus, Lulu could have visited any or many other locations in Avernus. You can add these to the revelation list (perhaps including triggered memories) to further flesh out Lulu’s back story, provide useful lore, or both.

REVELATION LIST – COOL STUFF

These additional revelations cover material from the Zariel/Lulu backstory that are significant, but not required for the Avernian Quest to make sense. Mostly I’ve created this list to properly distribute this lore throughout the campaign. Because these are non-essential elements, it’s not strictly necessary to follow the Three Clue Rule. (Although I generally have because it’s just good praxis.)

For The Reckoning and Rift War stuff, couldn’t some of the clues be within any tomes that the PCs might look through while in Candlekeep? I know there’s a possibility that they might not necessarily look into that while in Candlekeep, but that’s what makes the Three Clue Rule the Three Clue Rule, no (or maybe as like a “Fourth” clue)?

  2. colin r says:

@Tosh Lee, seems like it would be possible to start seeding the Reckoning and Rift War in Candlekeep, though that sequence is already pretty stuffed with infodumps, so you’d risk either murdering your adventure pacing and boring the players, or having the information get completely lost amongst all the critical stuff with the Zariel, the Pact of Elturel, and Gargauth.

  3. colin r says:

What do you mean by “The Three Generals: Yael”, etc? It seems like they can at least be subdivided into revelations of the public information (this person existed, was a leader, and died during the Charge) and the secret history (this is what happened to them in Hell). I’m trying to make sure we get the public information on all of them in Hellturel, once Lulu’s revelations establish that the Charge is important.

  4. Tosh Le says:

@Colin Yeah, I’d really only do it if the PCs are *actively looking for* material related to Zariel, as I’d imagine most of the more recent stuff they’d probably have tomes on. If the PCs are actively seeking out lore in Candlekeep I feel that they should be rewarded for seeking it out, but also that presumes they have some of a handle on the lore already presented.
I do agree that Candlekeep (which, tbh, surprise the place with a bunch of books is an infodump) is a really big infodump and adding more might only confuse the players, but I still think that it’s an interesting option, and so I wanted to put it out there.

  5. colin r says:

My players have not been proactive about researching Zariel at all, so for me I feel like there’s almost too much already that needs to be explained in the next session or two. (I need to cover “who is Zariel” and “who is Gargauth” and “what happened on the Night of the Red Coup” and “how do infernal pacts work” pretty much one after another. It’s going to be a lot.) If yours are more into lore, then yeah, probably worth giving them all they can handle in Candlekeep.

I really dig the stained glass artwork at the header. Any idea who the artist is who did it?

  8. Tosh Le says:

@Colin Indeed, one of my players really loves lore, so I’ve kinda just been feeding it to them!

  9. Louis says:

Are you going to be continuing this remix? It’s truly amazing.

  10. croald says:

It’s still chugging along. In last week’s Twitch stream Justin was working on some material that he hasn’t put up on the site here yet. (Though you can watch the recorded stream if you want 20 minutes of Avernus material spread through 2 hours of chat.)

  11. TheEvilSquid says:

I’m a bit confused about how these revelations are intended to be used. If I’m interpreting this correctly, then the bullet points beneath each heading are the triggers which prompt the revelation contained in the heading. But what is the material for the heading? Has Justin written these as full flashbacks, or are these just a prompt for “create your own material relevant to this piece of lore”?

  12. Justin Alexander says:

@TheEvilSquid: This is a revelation list, which we also discussed earlier in the Remix, not a list of triggered memories.

The heading is the part of Lulu’s memories/history (as described in detail at the beginning of Part 6D) which the PCs are learning about. The bullet points are an index of where clues/information regarding that piece of Lulu’s past can be found.

For example, information about the Trial of Asmodeus can be gained through a triggered memory, in the Adjunct Court of Hell, or at the Asmodean Pillars. (Note that, per the Three Clue Rule, the PCs don’t need to necessarily find all of those clues.)
