I’m finding L&L to be a great introduction to the 3.5 rules set. I do agree with the reviewers criticism about the flavor text for races. I also find some of the details like aging rules and henchmen numbers to be pretty advanced. Maybe they belong in appendices? Otherwise, though, it is a great intro to the RPG rules that so many people are still using. (Still have to read the stunt rules).
