Phandalin and the surrounding region of the Sword Coast have featured in three D&D adventures:
Here I’ve adapted Mike Schley’s excellent region map, featured in each of these adventures, into an accurate-but-simplified hexmap.
The reason for creating a map like this, of course, is to serve as a GM’s map while running a hexcrawl:
- The alphanumeric hex grid makes it easy to key content to the map.
- The simplified iconography makes it easier to adjudicate terrain modifiers.

Phandalin Region Map – Label Layers
I ran phandalin as a hexcrawl a few years ago and didn’t want my players working from the perfectly accurate official map so I made a simple “paper” map:

It’s actually pretty accurate, but I think having it *look* like it’s a rough sketch is important for getting Players to accept that the map is not the territory.
(Full permission to use or edit it, it’s not really “my” map since it’s essentially just me copying the existing Mike Schely map in a different style at low detail)
@Reveilled: Would it also be OK if I hosted a local copy of the map here on the Alexandrian?
Yes, absolutely!
Thanks! What’s the scale?
The map uses 12 mile hexes, appropriate for a standard Alexandrian hexcrawl!
@Reveilled: Awesome maps! I will totally use them. Wouldn’t Helm’s Hold be near Neverwinter still? Or do you consider that too small a settlement to be worth marking?
Helm’s Hold, although canonically located southeast of Neverwinter, doesn’t actually appear on Schley’s maps for the Starter Set.
This is why it appears as a separate set of layers on the Photoshop layer file I created, and I would assume also why it wasn’t included on Reveilled’s map.
@Reveilled – would it be possible to have to source file ? I would love to introduce ttrpg to teenagers here in France and this map would definitely bring a huge wow effect to the table ; with the source file I would be able to translate the cities and roads name. In any case, thanks a lot for sharing it !
