So You Want To Be a Game Master

Official certificate, pictured with gold medal.

I’m very pleased to announce that So You Want to Be a Game Master has won the 2024 Gold ENNIE Award for Best RPG Related Product.

I’d like to take a moment to repeat a few words of thanks from my acceptance speech:

First, thank you to Elliot Wren Phillips at Page Street Press. Without them, this book would not exist.

Thanks, also, to my wife and daughter. When I got COVID midway through writing the book and ended up staring down a nearly impossible deadline, they rallied to support me through some real literary crunch to make sure the book happened.

And thanks to everyone reading this! This award would not have been possible without the entire Alexandrian community.

Speaking of which…

The Alexandrian - Best Online Content - Gold ENNIE 2024

The Alexandrian also won a 2024 Gold ENNIE for Best Online Content!

I think a testament to the true value of online content is the community which supports it and, hopefully, is supported by it. Whether you’re a website-reader, a Twitch stream chatter, a Youtube watcher, a mailing list subscriber, or a Discord member, thank you for being a part of this community. And a very large thank you to all of the patrons of the Alexandrian. This website really could not exist without your support.

I’m looking forward to creating even more amazing books, videos, articles, games, and adventures in the years to come!

But for now, here’s So You Want to Be a Game Master nestled among the other award-winners at the ENNIES Gen Con booth:

“Hey! Why’d this take you so long to announce on the website?”

Unfortunately, I also won COVID at Gen Con.

It’s a hassle for me to upload graphics, etc. to the website when I’m on the road, so my plan was to do it when I got back. Instead, I tested positive, went into quarantine for a week to protect my family, and then had another trip. So yesterday and today were really the first time I was able to work on the website without being in survival mode since July.

I actually recorded this video while in quarantine. Fortunately, the first take worked, because by the end of the second take I was visibly symptomatic!

Website update also includes a new awards graphic for the sidebar and a full awards section added to the About page!

    You earned it!

  5. WhyLater says:

    Well deserved. Congratulations!

  6. Torpor says:

Congrats, well deserved! This year on the international day of books, the company I work for gifted each of the employees one book of their choice from a bookstore they partnered up with here in Luxembourg city. I chose this book and got it, made me so happy! Your writing, ideas and thoroughness are amazing, I will use this book to improve my DM skills 🙂

  7. Justin Alexander says:

Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate you all being just as excited as I am about the book!

@Torpor: What an incredibly cool thing for your company to do. And I’m honored my book was your pick!

  8. Sébastien says:

    Congratulations !
Now there is two things you need to do:
    – translate it in French so I can offer it to my son
    – propose a deluxe edition, as I have read my copy so many times it is already falling appart!

    Great work, you deserve it

  9. Random_Phobosis says:

Congratulations and thank you for your work!
Both your website and your book aren’t just a site and a book about RPGs. They, in my opinion, are indeed THE ttrpg site and THE ttrpg book. And that’s awesome!

  10. Danny says:

    Congratulations,

I bought it and showed it to friends that immediately went and bought copies too.

My collection of “how to role play” books is small, there are not many out there that have real value. Yours is at the top of those.

    Well done.

  11. Vahlir says:

    Congrats!!

After taking almost close to 25 years off of TTRPGs I was lost when I came back to the hobby. Your book and website has been a torch in the dark as I’ve found my way back through the hobby and DMing.

I’ve loved being able to engage with designers and people who’ve put a life worth of effort into the hobby and it’s been a favorite part of the hobby for me since I’ve come back. There are so many great people out there putting out quality content and engaging with the community.

Thanks for all the advice you’ve given!
