RPGs Aren’t Movies

July 30th, 2021

I have a short video for you today!

I’ve just hired a professional editing company to help me speed up my video production process. I’ve got raw footage for three more videos after this one that’s been sitting on my hard drives for weeks, so if this works out I’m hoping to get back to regular video releases.

    Interesting thoughts here.

I often find myself using examples from other mediums to describe gaming to newbies, because all my players are newbies – or their parents. “Think of this as an adventure movie, only you’re the hero. I’m telling the story, but you decide what the characters do.”

I especially like the concept of describing “alternate endings” to the linear stories potential players are familiar with.

I’ll try doing it as you describe. I’ve been asked to run an introductory campaign in the teen tech lab at work. The catch being that the video I use to entice players to join will be about fifteen seconds long!

It can be easy to confuse RPG sessions with linear stories because, when you recount what happened in your latest RPG session, you are telling a linear story. It’s critical to remember that, even though what emerges is often a linear story, what goes into the session in the first place is a rich collection of ingredients that the Players and GM turn into a linear story. The story isn’t the ingredient, it’s the result.
