reaction to Dune, click here. Here's an interesting reading of Dune: Everybody gets what they want... and nobody gets what they expect. Paul survives... but is cursed by Jihad. Baron Harkonnen gets an heir upon the throne of the Empire... except the heir is also an Atreides. The Emperor always wanted Leto Atreides as a son... and gets Paul instead. Irulan wanted to become the mother of a dynasty (more explicitly so in Dune Messiah)... and ends up married to the Emperor but with no hopes of dynasty from her loins. The Bene Gesserits want the kwisatz haderach... they get Paul. The Guild wants the spice protected... but find themselves subjected. Even Chani wants Usul... and she gets Muad'dib.
